Magic Carpet heading to Allyson
Magic Carpet heading to Allyson

Blue Span

After a restful night in Sullivan Bay, we had the PEEL OFF. aat the restaurant. We maintined our 15% +/- error from our predicted log. I think I know why and will dicuss with Bob and then let you know how it changes thre results to apply what I think I know to what occured... does that make sense, no it doesn't but bear with me.

Before the peel of where found out how consistent we were, we decided to leave. Immediately after. I had reviewed the predictions of wind, current and wave height and recommended we depart. I think I made the right decision as Jim on Sarah B had also decided to make a run to Allyson Harbor, the storm hole, to be closer to Cape Caution and then make an attempt to cross Cape Caution into the northern passages.

Our departure was delayed about 40 minutes when we became blocked by the super yacht, AMORE. She was berthed in the same fairway as us but because of the design of the marina, the fairway narrowed. We were trapped! Amore obliged and moved forward to create space at the end of the fairway and allow us to depart. We were followed out by Blue Span.

We made a dash for Allison Harbor, about a 3-4 hour trip. The winds, seas and currents were cooperative. We pulled into Allison about 7 pm. We took the dogs into the beach, as it were, and allowed the dogs to relieve themselves. Can you get excited about a dog going poo? Well, Dusty did not like the floating patch of grass as Sullivan Bay and had not relieved herself since departing the previous harbor 2 days before! Yes, you can get excited about a dog's bm's. The last thing we want is a dog that is ill on the boat.l. Ewww!

Allyson Harbor, our over night storm hole.

We came back to the boat, prepared dinner, perused the Predict Wind data and decided it would be best to leave at first light, before sunrise. The distance to travel to safe harbor would be predicated on what the actual was when we poked our nose out of the storm hole. As expected after perusing Predict Wind and discussing with Ed and Scott, the conditions were favorable for a crossing of the open water infront of Cape Caution. We headed out of Allyson at 430'ish and headed northwest into the building seas and the building winds. We arrived to River Inlet and headed to Dawson for a top off of fuel. Scott called and advised us that our hope to fuel up the boat and perhaps do some shopping was not to be as the place looked as though it had closed down, removed all structures and left a run down pier. Bummer! We turned around and headed to the Fry Pans, to anchor near Suzie Q in the north bay. As we headed out of River Inlet, the seas had increased to about 2 meters. Fortunately the period of the sea was about 9 seconds so while, rolly was not bad. We turned our back to the sea as we approache the channel to the Fry Pans and had smooth sailing until we arrived and rafted up to Blue Span. The dogs were taken to shore and we returned to the boat. I made breaksfast for lunch and then came below to blog but instead fell asleep at the computer.

Approaching Allyson last night, Blue Span and Suzy Q in little Fry Pan anchorage, The girls, happy to be on a boat that is not bouncing and bobbing on the ocean.

Back to the predicted log race. We have been running the legs at 10.3 mile per hour vs 10.3 nautical miles per hour. l think we did much better that we think because of the error in reporting our speed over ground.
